How do Fish Feed ?

Jun 2, 2014

It’s pretty “COOL” to discover how trout feed … I turn in to a predator hunting with my eyes, it’s not just more information on how I’m going to catch the fish, but also, it’s the electricity that goes from my toes to the top of my head of the battle coming ahead.

How do trout feed  Under the water

It’s hard to recognized a trout feeding  under water, you’ve got to have “Eagle Eyes ” (…like me !) or be “Aqua man”.  The best way to realize when a fish is feeding under  water is;

a) Spotting the trout. To do this, your sight should be focused on the bottom surface  or on rocks in the water and look for trout shapes or moving trout shapes. My personal favorite are moving logs, generally they are big monster trout !

Tip – Don’t focus on the surface of the moving water !!!

B)  Study their behavior. (…once spotted !) Generally you will see them moving actively, in one area, while they eat. It’s almost  like they burp under water  when they eat a bug under  water ! … but  in most cases without breaking the surface of the water.  Also look for flashes under the water. When they feed, they turn their bodies and the sun reflects on them  creating a flash.

How do trout feed  on top of the water

It’s not rocket science to identify a trout feeding on the surface, generally you see a splash, a big tail or a big mouth sticking out of the water. In calm water or in a lake, a ring is very common after a fish has eating a bug from the surface.

It’s crucial to understand and to recognized how trout feed. This takes  us one step closer  to success, after all, our fly is imitating “what and how” they want  to eat it.
